You helped me understand how to update my Facebook so that it shows how I want people to see me. What a nice step by step tutorial, Kim. I haven't made the switch yet, haven't had much time to do it. Also I do blame Facebook a bit for their lack of instructions or even a heads up when they make these changes. Such a clear article! Thanks for the tips on editing our timelines…I am still trying to tweak mine.
Thanks so much for clearing this up Kim! I had no idea the that you could highlight some of your posts…that for me, is great news! I'm looking forward to learning how to also better "brand" my cover page!
Thanks for sharing with us! Kim — thanks for the step by step directions. Im hesitant about using the timeline because I didn't like the idea of people being able to quickly and easily go back to my posts from three to four years ago, but based on what im reading here — I can control that! Once you change the timeline, you cannot change back. Thanks for the info about highlighting your best posts, I hadn't discovered that one yet. I know people are constantly complaining about Facebook changes, but I think they've really done good this time.
I love the new timeline, although it does take some practice, like everything new. Thanks Kim, your blog is always relevant and full of good advice. I love the new timeline. I like the look and how you can choose to highlight a story or feature certain photos. Hey Kim! Thanks so much for this post it's one of "those" things I've been meaning to get round to doing and this is the best step by step I've found so far — thank you!!
Tracy x. Thanks Kim! I had already switched but have not played with it much! Love that we can highlight a post with that star feature! I need to pencil in time to play! I've heard mixed reviews on this Timeline feature. But these are great tips and you make it so easy to follow.
More on this later. If you're content with everything out there, you can probably skip the next section. Live in public! If you want to lock it all down, or have some subtlety to your digital life, though, this could take a while. You've got a few options, and unfortunately, there's no magic button that lets you hide or share everything in bulk. Just hope you've been happy with how you've dealt with your sharing privacy settings in the past, or you've got a lot of clicking in your future.
Of course, you can go through and manually hide, delete, or adjust the sharing settings on every piece of shared information in your Timeline, but that could take weeks.
More immediately, you can considerably limit visibility by heading to your Privacy Settings. The Limit Audience for Past Posts option quickly changes everything you've posted publicly or to 'Friends of Friends' to only visible by Friends.
Unfortunately, there's no way to start fresh and set everything in your past as visible only to you. Still, it's a great time to get intimately familiar with your Privacy Settings, and reintroduce yourself to how tags work and filter through Facebook. Double check your default sharing settings: Everything you post on your Timeline going forward will be posted under those same permission levels.
And, we recommend turning on Timeline Review, a feature that prompts you before posting pictures your friends have tagged you in on your Timeline. Let's just agree that Facebook hasn't solved the friend issue.
Should you give your ex, grandmother, and boss the same level of access to your profile? Or would you open up to a close old buddy as much as you would to a new friend? Unfortunately, you've got to make that call here, and the easiest way to define what information gets shared with which people is through Lists.
Granted, it's kind of gross explicitly sorting your contacts into different piles by how much information you want to share with them — something we unconsciously do in real life interactions — and Lists simply can't reproduce the subtlety with which we structure face to face discussions, but it's the best you're going to get for now. The point here is to set up groups like "Family," "Close Friends," "People who would like to see my music rants," or "Coworkers.
For example, all your friends who you went to college with are automatically sorted into that Smart List. The same thing happens with people who identify themselves as family members. A still image profile picture is good, but a video offers a whole new level of creativity.
To set a video as a profile picture , tap on your profile photo and you will see the options to upload a picture or video. Here you can either choose to create a new profile video or select one from your phone gallery. The maximum video time allowed is 7 seconds. So you need to make sure that your video is not longer than this duration. Thankfully, Facebook offers handy editing tools to trim and customize video to your liking.
The video will start looping when someone will open your Facebook profile, similar to a GIF. I also really love how you can even enable sound in the video to really surprise your profile visitors. So these were few of the tricks you can use to jazz up your Facebook Timeline and get more out of it. How do I share something on Facebook? How do I share my feelings or what I'm doing in a status update on Facebook? How do I edit a post I've shared on Facebook?
How do I remove something posted on my Facebook timeline? How do I change the date of a post on my Facebook timeline? How do I add my location to an existing Facebook post? Where can I see posts that I need to review before they're added to my Facebook profile? How do I stop people from posting on my profile on Facebook?
