I wrote LOOK. I sucked! I wrote that word hundreds of times a day. Skateboarding had been cool but this was a whole new level of rebellion and expression, a purpose to sneaking around. It was catching too. There were probably of us at school who wrote and we had a small school. Graffitti was such a huge, huge problem in Philly in the 80s.
It was costing the city money, lots and lots of money to clean up. We would have to go to the art supply store and get a stranger to buy paint for us like it was beer or just lift it. My boy Fed who is now my manager!
Zinny, who would sell us paint. Zinny was an old Italian shopkeeper who had a small, dusty, disorganized art supply store on the block of Pine St. We would go in, these 2 the innocent looking 15 year old boys, and convince Mr.
Zinny that we needed spray paint for this and that. My little sister having a sleepover, my parents getting ready to go out to dinner and me getting ready to meet my boys on South St.
There was this old abandoned building on 22nd St. We would skate, bike or bus it uptown and meet up there.
Climbing up the gutted stairways of the trash infested shell of a building, probably breathing asbestos and all kinds of shit, we would kick it on the rooftop.
Hanging wide eyed by the water tower coughing on cigarettes and trying to fit in with the best writers in town. It was there I smoked weed for the first time. It was around those tracks we would run from the cops, paint cans and markers jangling like a hundred keys in our pockets, ditching and running.
You could control the flow of the paint from a spray paint can by switching the cap. It was always the thing to do after school, go raid the hardware and grocery store for fat caps and thin caps.
The caps would be on cans of cleaners. Just wait till no one was around pop the cap in your pocket and nonchalantly put the can of Marble Magic back on the shelf. Back then you could hardly buy a can of aerosol based cleaner that had a cap left on it. It offers air-conditioned rooms with a balcony, safe and free Wi-Fi.
The Marissal Guest House is in the centre of Nerja, a typical Andalusian town with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. Located on the Costa del Sol, it is less than 60 km from Malaga. The guest house also has a relaxing lounge. Rooms at the Marissal Hostal are bright and comfortable, with simple, classic design. They all have a TV and a private bathroom with a hairdryer. Show less. Reviews of Hotels in Nerja. We really liked it here. Owners speak little English , however I also speak little Spanish so I think this is more my fault since the hostel is in Spain.
We managed though and was no issues and I thought all staff were friendly. A hostel in Spain is just a small hotel. This hostel for info has a reception but no bar or other facilities apart from a garden at the back of the hostel. No lift but stairs easy to go up and down. Location brilliant and as well as close to the bus station, 2 supermarkets and a few cafes you are also only 5 minutes walk to the centre.
Come out of the hotel and go left to go to the main part of town. Turn right and left and left again to supermarkets and some cafes. The only mirror is in the bathroom so take a small make up mirror if like me you like sitting down at a dressing table to put your make up on.
In the room we had a double bed, 1 side table with a draw and a dressing table with 2 draws. The open wardrobe also had a shelf and a draw. There was also a nice biggish pouffe style chair.
The bathroom had a mirror, nice sink with hand wash built in, a hairdryer and a fab double shower. The shower was very good and had 2 shower heads and also shower gel. Above the loo was also a shelf. You do get toilet roll provided and 4 clean towels ever day as well as a floor towel I was really impressed getting clean towels every day as not many places do this.
There was no safety deposit box in the room so we had to hide our passports, money etc. However I did feel like it was safe and it was. This is the only thing I would love to have the option if if I went back. There was a small fridge and it did the job.
We had a small balcony which overlooked the garden and we were in the 2nd floor. We could hear a little noise now and again but nothing to bother us. Plug sockets were next to each side of the bed a. Apartamentos Abril. We stayed here for four nights in March, and had a wonderful stay. We had booked to stay in the one bedroomed apartment block up the street where we had stayed last year, but the owner had upgraded us to a two bedroomed apartment in their sister property in the same street.
The apartment itself was gorgeous, huge and roomy with a lovely mezzanine bedroom with its own private toilet and terrace. The lower area had a huge lounge diner, roomy kitchen, small shower room and toilet and en suite bathroom off the main bedroom, plus a lovely terrace with sea views.
I understand a previous reviewers comment about the small shower, but since there was also a shower over the bath, we simply used that one. Yes, there was some noise from the building site over the road, but this is something the owners have no control over, and has probably finished by now.
It certainly didn't spoil our holiday. Highly recommend. Hostal Boutique Plaza Cantarero. I arrived last week after a few days in Malaga and was feeling a bit frazzeled after a bad hostel experience in Malaga.
Arriving in Nerja on the bus, I asked directions to the Balcon de Europa and was directed through Pintada by the police. I noticed some hostals there and rang on the door of the Hostal Boutique Plaza Cantarero expecting a hostel of sorts. In fact, it was a beautiful hotel offering singles or doubles and due to COVD was pretty empty so I was offered a double room ensuite for 45 Euros which I took as needed to wind down from Malaga.
This turned out to be even better than I expected. This boutique hotel has quiet rooms with a youtube button as well as Netflix on the TV.
The whole place is done out with a Moroccan style theme and there were books provided to read. I hadn't bothered to read the notice I was handed when I arrived until the following morning. A shame because I discovered there was a beautiful, quiet, sunlit roofgarden complete with a kitchen for guest's use, smoking area, sun loungers and showers. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the town, or cook for yourself, it's ideal. It also looked down onto the owner's lovely enclosed garden.
The room I had was extemely comfortable with an ensuite shower and lovely Argan Oil shower gels and soap. I believe the hotel also has a "honeymoon" suite from the descriptions of the rooms I saw. I was due to go back to photograph that afternoon but sadly had no battery and couldn't get the camera charged. I would recommend this lovely hostal, nicer than some 5 star hotels I've stayed in.
The owners have really paid attention to the smallest details and I would recommend it as a great place to stay, with a lovely local coffee shop and access to many shops, supermarkets and the Balcon de Europa.
We had a fabulous room with a terrace and sun loungers looking over the pool and out to sea, the scenery was amazing. The Hotel is right in the middle of the Balcon de Europa and attached to a lovely bar with views of the ocean that are out of this world. The staff were very friendly, the room had a little kitchenette, which was great, the room was very clean and beds very comfortable. Stayed February with TUI.
On first impressions the room was very nice. King size bed plus a single, excellent shower room complete with hairdryer. Hotel was spotless, reception staff and guy in restaurant very nice and friendly.
Lovely cooked food plus continental breakfast. We were allocated room , this is where the problem lay. This room sits on top of the bar next door to the hotel and also adjacent to the nightclub which entrance is underneath the hotel. We arrived on a Sunday so on return to the hotel we had a last drink in the bar next door which was closing down around There was some noise constantly in the hotel from the refurbishments going on upstairs on the rooftop pool area which was closed at the time of our visit.
Wine is one of the most subjective pleasures of all, as no two palates are alike. A well-made wine is, in a word, balanced. In the two-plus decades that I have been writing this column, I have always striven to write about wines that have a sense of place, and the people who have devoted their lives to pursuing the passion that is winemaking. As such, this list is simply a collection of 10 wines I have enjoyed immensely over the last year; they offer solid value and should still available by the time this column goes to print.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I have. Pasta may have gotten a bad rap over the years, but we love it because it is versatile, easy-to-prepare, and above-all, comforting. Here are two of our favourite recipes meant to feed a crowd or saved for leftovers :. After spending much of my 20s scarfing down slices at Wicked Wedge, it felt magical re-entering that same 17th Avenue space in my 30s to sit at an elegant bar and dine on a thin crust potato-topped pizza while sipping red wine.
Researchers have found that bribery can entice frazzled people to eat more fruit and vegetables. Bring the fresh, Mediterranean flavours of Greek cuisine into your home with our simple recipes. Yes, we saw some favourite spots close goodbye Cilantro and La Chaumiere, you continue to be missed!
As your restaurant columnist, there was never a lack of new places to cover, with delicious and interesting restaurants opening in even the far corners of the city. The key to building a superlative sandwich lies not in the recipe but in the ratios. These crowd pleasers can be made ahead of time, so all you need to do is reheat and entertain. Not gonna lie, the taste and texture of pemmican is a little, well, acquired.
Just one of many things I learned on an interesting trek through Grotto Canyon with Mahikan Trails, a Canmore-based company that specializes in Indigenous tourism.
